When I'm thinking about a birthday gift for mom I immediately thinking about the surprise I made for my sister in law:

For my sister in law's 40th birthday I made the family placemats. We went to a restaurant to celebrate her birthday, when we reached our reserved table my sister in law, Iris, was surprised to see the placemats with pictures from her childhood, family photos, her children and loved ones. Iris was speechless (and that doesn't happen often) to see photos of her good times and of her loved ones. This gift was the true no' 1 gift at the party. In second place - the no' 2 gift at that party was a very expensive gift. Yes, it is the thought and time you put into a gift that counts.

Most families use placemats bought in stores to protect their dining room table. As nice as these placemats can be (and usually they are not very pretty) they are never fire up a conversation like the homemade ones. Here is an opportunity to create a personal placemat for your significant ones on their birthday.

As a mother I can say that a great birthday gift for mom has two elemnets: It is homemade and it has a personal touch (pictures etc'). This birthday present for mom has both these elements.

How do you make these mats? Well, here we go!

Materials:

• 6 sheets of construction paper (thick and sturdy paper) in different colors, size A3
• As many photographs as possible of the gift recipient from all times - childhood, family events and friends.
• Glue

Tools:

• Scissors or Craft Knife. Be careful when using the craft knife – it is very sharp. If children are making the gift please assist them or give them kid scissors.
• Lamination machine (Relax, you don’t have to buy a machine, you can go to one of the specialty stores in your area and have them laminate the placemats there)

Instrction:

1.Scan the various pictures you have chosen for the placemats.		2.Print the pictures from your printer and cut them out.
3.Take the 6 construction paper sheets. On each sheet glue pictures from a certain period or choose a theme from your mothers life (for instance hobbies, marriage etc').		4.I recommend that you glue the pictures in a different way on each sheet, so that each placemat will have a different look and create intrest. (you can see examples at the end of the gift description)
5.After the glue has dried up, take the construction paper sheets to a specialty store for lamination. Laminate each sheet separately.		6. The End

Now you have family placemats which is a wonderful gift – pretty and practical. Your mother will love to pull these mats out for family gatherings and to show them off in front of her friends. mom will always cherish this gift as something that was made especially for her.

Here is a tip: There are many variations on this subject. Cutting out photos, adding drawings, letters, dry leafs etc'. Use your imagination – you will find out the creative side in you.
